Tarnished Career

Tsk Tsk...
Joe Paterno. Most people that watch college football, know that name and face as a well known figure in collegiate sports. The man has nearly lived and breathed Penn State football as their head coach for almost 46 years. Over the course of the last few months, news has broken that his assistant coaching staff was involved in a child molestation during his Penn State career and on the Penn State grounds.

Jerry Sandusky was Paterno's assistant coach who is the one accused of using a non-profit organization for underprivileged kids to funnel kids for his abuse. It's pretty sickening to think that there are people out there like Sandusky in this world. Its a double whammy because its bad enough to be a child molester but using an organization to abuse under privileged kids that have already had a rough life is unimaginable in my eyes.

Sandusky was caught by one of his staff engaging inappropriately with a child in the campus locker room and it was reported to Paterno. Paterno in turn reported it to the althletic dept head and it stopped there.  Scumbags like Sandusky are one thing, but when the act is reported to someone and nothing is done, your almost as bad. Of course, if your like me hearing this story the whole thing is naturally a cover up by the organization (Penn State) to save face of having scum work in your organization.

The sad part of it all is who knows how many kids were involved. For Paterno, a man that was well respected may have been told to not report it further than what he did, but it cost him his job and his reputation has been tarnished. Regardless of his accomplishments, he will forever be known in this scandal at Penn State.

At the end of the day Paterno may not have been a bad person, but go with your gut even if it may cost you in the short run.

Looking forward to UH putting a whoooping on Penn State Ticketcity Bowl!

  1. Poor guy...I kind of still feel for him. This situation is pretty serious but it still raises the question, How far does someone go to report something like this? Realistically, if I knew something like that was happening I would definitely report it and hope that it was handled but I can't say I would have taken it further and risked losing my job and working relationship based on allegations at that time. It's easy for us to say what he did was wrong in hindsight but what would we have done? I guess this situation will make ppl think twice when a situation is reported. My opinion is completely based on How far does someone go to report something we HEAR about (not a situation we personally witnessed) at a workplace?

On a separate note, what Sandusky did was disgusting and sick!!! I cringe when I think about what he has done to those little kids. He has issues deeper than what we see on the surface and he needs some major help and prayer!

  2. I feel bad for Paterno, in life things are not as simple as they seem to an outsider. My life may seem simple, but it is far from that, and vice versa. So I feel bad for him being caught up in the scandal.
These things happen alot, people just don't realize it, or don't pay that much attention to small things, b/c they are caught up in their own life and issues. Maybe I watch too my SVU, but I want to be aware of these things, I dont want to be the parent that is like WHAT, that doesnt happen??!! So this scandal is not a big shock to me, I am sure there are other people out there doing the same thing with nonprofits, just wait and see...

  3. Having worked for a nonprofit, I have definitely seen scumbags out there that abuse the system. However, i agree with Sheena - how far do we go in reporting something? It's definitely easier said than done. But I guess this story just challenges me to go the extra mile if something like this happens. I think that's the major takeaway.
